# How many words is a 5 minute speech?

Published: November 4, 2026 · Author: Deepak Gupta

A 5 minute speech is about 750 words at a speaking pace of 150 words a minute. A slow, pause-heavy delivery fits 500 to 650 words, and a brisk one reaches about 900. Choose your pace first, then multiply it by 5.

*Last updated: October 29, 2026. The pace used here is the one in Kveeky's own words to minutes calculator, and every figure below is plain arithmetic you can repeat.*

This guide shows the arithmetic, the range for different speakers, and how to adjust for pauses. [Kveeky](https://kveeky.com/) uses 150 words a minute in its [words to minutes calculator](/resources/words-to-minutes-calculator/), so that is the pace we use throughout.

## The 5 minute word count

A 5 minute speech is about 750 words when you speak at 150 words a minute, a comfortable conversational pace. Here is the range for other speeds. The labels in the last column are ours, not an industry standard.

| Pace | Words a minute | Words in 5 minutes | How it feels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow | 100 | 500 | Careful, with long pauses |
| Relaxed | 130 | 650 | Calm and clear |
| Standard | 150 | 750 | Conversational |
| Brisk | 180 | 900 | Fast, little room to breathe |

## The arithmetic

Words in a speech equal words a minute times minutes. At 150 words a minute, 5 minutes gives 150 x 5 = 750 words. You can also work in seconds: 150 / 60 = 2.5 words a second, and 5 minutes is 300 seconds, so 300 x 2.5 = 750.

To go the other way, divide your word count by your pace. A 600 word draft is 600 / 150 = 4 minutes. For a quick answer on any length, use the [words to minutes calculator](/resources/words-to-minutes-calculator/) or the other [free script tools](/tools/).

<details style="margin:20px 0;border:1px solid #dbeafe;border-radius:12px;background:#ffffff"><summary style="min-height:44px;display:flex;align-items:center;padding:6px 16px;font:600 16px/1.4 var(--kv-font-body);color:#172554;cursor:pointer">Show me: how long is a 640 word draft?</summary><div style="padding:0 16px 16px;font:400 16px/1.6 var(--kv-font-body);color:#1f2937"><ol style="margin:0;padding-left:22px"><li style="margin:0 0 8px">640 / 150 = 4.27 minutes.</li><li style="margin:0 0 8px">0.27 of a minute is about 16 seconds, so the draft runs 4 minutes 16 seconds.</li><li style="margin:0 0 8px">You have 44 seconds left to fill 5 minutes. At 2.5 words a second, that is about 110 more words.</li></ol></div></details>

## Pauses and slides

Pauses lower your word count, because silence uses time but adds no words. A 3 second pause at 2.5 words a second equals 7.5 words. Eight pauses of 3 seconds take 24 seconds, which is 60 words, so a 750 word speech becomes 690 words.

Plan for pauses when you expect laughs, applause, slides or a demonstration. A wedding toast or a eulogy needs more room than a fast status update. At a relaxed 130 words a minute, 5 minutes is 650 words, a safe target for most live speaking.

## Words on the page

750 words is roughly 12 to 15 paragraphs of 50 to 60 words. Page counts change with font, spacing and margins, so count words rather than pages. A paragraph of about 60 words takes 24 seconds to say, which makes a handy unit: 12 or 13 of them make 5 minutes.

If you write for a presentation, add one slide for every 40 to 60 seconds of talking, which is 100 to 150 words. That is a planning habit, not a rule. See text to speech for PowerPoint if you want slides narrated.

## Time a sample paragraph

The fastest way to learn your own pace is to time a block of text. Copy the paragraph below, read it aloud with a stopwatch and compare. It is 95 words, so at 150 words a minute it takes about 38 seconds.

<div style="margin:28px 0;padding:20px 22px;background:#eff6ff;border:1px solid #dbeafe;border-radius:12px"><div style="font:700 17px/1.3 var(--kv-font-heading);color:#172554;margin-bottom:6px">Try it: time this 95 word paragraph</div><p style="margin:0 0 12px;font:400 16px/1.6 var(--kv-font-body);color:#1f2937">Start the timer, read it at your natural speed, and stop at the last word. ## Hear it with an AI voice

You can also hear a draft before you stand up. [Kveeky](https://kveeky.com/) charges 1 credit per character and paid plans give about 750 credits per minute, so a 5 minute script is about 3,750 credits (5 x 750). The free plan includes 500 credits a month, about 40 seconds or roughly 100 words, enough to listen to the sample paragraph above. Writing for the ear matters as much as length. Our guide to the [AI voiceover script](/blog/ai-voiceover-script) covers short sentences, pause control and pronunciation fixes. ## Frequently asked questions

### How many words is a 5 minute speech?

About 750 words at 150 words a minute. A slow speaker at 100 words a minute needs 500 words, and a brisk speaker at 180 words a minute needs 900. Pick your own pace by timing a read-aloud, then multiply it by 5. Pauses for slides or laughter reduce the number further.

### How many words is a 5 minute toast?

Aim for 600 to 650 words. A toast has pauses for laughter and glasses raised, so a relaxed pace of 120 to 130 words a minute is safer than 150. At 130 words a minute, 5 minutes is 650 words, which leaves room for a slow, warm delivery.

### How many minutes is 1,000 words?

At 150 words a minute, 1,000 words takes 1,000 / 150 = 6.67 minutes, which is 6 minutes 40 seconds. At a relaxed 130 words a minute it takes about 7 minutes 42 seconds. Divide any word count by your pace to get minutes.

### Is 150 words a minute too fast?

150 words a minute is the conversational middle that our calculator uses, not a rule. Read 100 words aloud with a timer. If it takes 40 seconds you speak at 150. If it takes 50 seconds your pace is 120.

### How many characters is a 5 minute speech?

On Kveeky, 1 credit equals 1 character and paid plans give about 750 credits per minute, so a 5 minute script is about 3,750 characters. A character count is a quick way to check whether a script fits your plan.

## Conclusion

A 5 minute speech is about 750 words at 150 words a minute, with a realistic range of 500 to 900. Time a short paragraph, set your own pace, subtract words for pauses and read the full draft once. When you want to hear it first, use the [words to minutes calculator](/resources/words-to-minutes-calculator/) or paste it into [Kveeky](https://kveeky.com/).

- Speaking pace: 150 words a minute is the value in Kveeky's own tool code (the ad length checker and words to minutes calculator), the version live on October 29, 2026. The 100, 130 and 180 word paces are example values we chose, not measured data.
- All other figures are arithmetic we show step by step: words = pace x minutes.
- Kveeky plan details: kveeky.com/pricing, free plan 500 credits a month (about 40 seconds), paid plans about 750 credits per minute, as listed in Kveeky's product facts on October 29, 2026.
