iOS 26.4 Introduces CarPlay Support for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

TL;DR

  • iOS 26.4 is set to revolutionize your driving experience by integrating AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude directly into CarPlay. This update allows for hands-free access to conversational AI for queries and assistance, enhancing convenience on the road. While these chatbots won't control vehicle functions, they offer a new way to interact with AI while driving, requiring developers to update their apps for this functionality.

iOS 26.4 Brings CarPlay Support for AI Chatbots

iOS 26.4 will allow CarPlay users to integrate third-party chatbots, providing access to AI services like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT. The CarPlay Developer Guide lists voice-based conversational apps as a supported type starting with iOS 26.4. Apple is also implementing a new voice control screen for visual feedback.

Implementation Details

AI apps need to support the new voice control screen. A specific entitlement is required for voice-based conversational apps, meaning chatbot developers must update their apps to include CarPlay support.

Limitations and Functionality

While CarPlay has supported third-party apps, Apple restricts the types available to minimize driver distraction. The new integration enables hands-free access to apps like ChatGPT for asking questions. However, these apps cannot control vehicle (iPhone) functions. Users must manually open the app on the CarPlay screen to initiate interaction, as there is no wake word option. The customizable voice control screen will provide vehicle-optimized chatbot experiences.

Supported App Categories

Apple has outlined the categories of apps now permitted in CarPlay in the CarPlay Developer Guide:

  • Audio apps
  • Communication apps (SiriKit Messaging or VoIP Calling)
  • Driving task apps
  • EV charging apps
  • Fueling apps
  • Navigation apps (route guidance with turn-by-turn directions)
  • Parking apps
  • Public safety apps
  • Quick food ordering apps
  • Voice-based conversational apps

Voice-Based App Requirements

Apple states that voice-based conversational apps must have a primary modality of voice upon launch and appropriately respond to questions or requests. These apps should optimize for voice interaction in the driving environment, avoiding text and imagery in query responses. Adoption depends on developers like OpenAI and Google updating their apps with CarPlay availability.

Siri Integration

These new apps won’t replace Siri in CarPlay. Users will need to open the dedicated ChatGPT app (or similar) on their car’s infotainment screen to use it.

iOS 26.4 New Features

Apple's iOS 26.4 update includes several new features and updates, including end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, updates to Stolen Device Protection, and the introduction of video podcasts. The beta is currently available to developers, with a public beta expected soon. iOS 26.4 is anticipated to launch this spring.

Playlist Playground

Apple Music introduces a new Playlist Playground feature that allows users to create playlists using text-based prompts. Users can type in an idea to receive automatic song suggestions for a playlist.

Apple Podcasts

Video podcast capabilities are coming to the Apple Podcasts app via HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). This provides podcast creators with control and monetization opportunities, while delivering a high-quality viewing experience. Users can switch between watching and listening, with videos available for offline viewing.

Stolen Device Protection

Stolen Device Protection is now enabled by default for all iPhone users. It requires additional authentication through Face ID or Touch ID to access certain features.

RCS Messaging

iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4 are testing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages. Messages sent via RCS with E2EE will display a lock icon in the conversation interface.

Additional Features

Other notable features include a redesigned Wallpaper Gallery, Freeform Creator Studio, and an "Urgent" section in the Reminders app.

Siri and Gemini Integration

While Apple reached a deal with Google to use Gemini AI for Siri upgrades, the integration may be delayed. Bloomberg reports that some features may be postponed to iOS 26.5 or iOS 27.

Notification Forwarding (EU)

In the iOS 26.3 beta, Apple tested a "Notification Forwarding" setting that allows incoming notifications on an iPhone to be forwarded to a third-party wearable device like an Android smartwatch, but it was not included in the launch version of the
